Informal Evaluation – The patient will undergo an informal assessment ( no formalized testing used ) using props that might include toys, pictures, games, balls, and wind up toys. The purpose of this session is, first, to develop a rapport with the patient that starts the foundation for trust, enthusiasm and fun. Once established, then asking the patient to perform certain exercises or participate in certain play is part of the fun. It is crucial to “be” where the patient is, and gently bring them to the target behavior with success and positive reinforcement. At the end of the session, insights are shared and goals are set that are understandable and time based, i.e., Johnny will be able to say “s” words, given pictures, with 80% accuracy, within three months time.

Consultations – Meetings are set up, typically monthly, with parents or caregivers, to review status and update goals. This gives everyone the opportunity to discuss concerns ( new or old ) and generate information about other environments the patients participates in besides therapy. There is no charge for consultations as it is believed this is an integral part of treating the patient.

Therapy – Sessions are scheduled based on need and tolerance. Most patients are seen once weekly for thirty minutes, though some prefer twice weekly at least to start. It is difficult to generate progress with a schedule that is less than once weekly. Some patients also do better with forty or forty-five minute sessions. Goals that are established at the informal evaluation are worked on throughout the sessions. Discussion always ensues after the session, even if briefly, to review what was focused on, performance levels and suggestions for home programming. Telepractice is also available for those who are appropriate candidates.

Home Programming – Patients will not progress without practicing, no differently than learning an instrument or playing a sport. It is suggested that practice takes place at the same time each day, for a minimum of once to twice daily. Suggestions will be made as to how to make home programming fun and effective. Parental support is necessary and often welcomed by the patient.
